Why choose the Chinese windmill palm?

The Chinese windmill palm, also known as Trachycarpus fortunei, is one of the best-known cold-tolerant palm species. What makes it truly special:

- it has spectacular, large, fan-shaped leaves
- it develops a characterful, fibrous trunk
- with the right location and protection, it can adapt well to Hungarian winters
- it feels best in sunny and bright places
- it can be grown in the garden, on the terrace, and in large pots
- it instantly creates a Mediterranean atmosphere

If you want to change the mood of your garden with a single plant, a well-developed windmill palm can be a spectacular focal point on its own.

Where to plant it?

The Chinese windmill palm prefers a sunny, bright, and preferably wind-protected spot. It looks particularly good, for example:

- next to the terrace,
- near the entrance,
- in Mediterranean garden sections,
- around a pool,
- or even as a standalone ornamental plant in the middle of a large lawn.

The soil must be well-draining, as stagnant water can cause problems, especially in winter.

How to care for it?

Young plants require regular watering, especially during the warmer summer periods. However, it is important to let the top layer of the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
Well-established specimens are generally more resistant, but in the great summer heat, they also appreciate an adequate water supply. From spring to late summer, we can support healthy development with proper nutrient replenishment for palms.

And what happens in winter?

This is one of the most common questions regarding the windmill palm. Trachycarpus fortunei has an exceptionally good cold tolerance among palms, but in Hungarian winters, younger and freshly planted specimens should be properly protected.
The main goal of winter protection is not to "keep the plant warm," but to protect it from prolonged frosts, winter precipitation, icy winds, and moisture. Protecting the heart leaf is especially important, as this is where new leaves develop from.

Planting out or keeping in a pot?

Both can work!

- Planted out: If you choose the right spot, the windmill palm can be a beautiful ornament of the garden in the long term. A plant kept in open ground can grow to an impressive size over time, lending an increasingly strong Mediterranean atmosphere to the garden.
- In a pot: If you do not want to plant it permanently, you can also grow it in a larger pot or container. The great advantage of this is that it can be easily moved to a protected place in winter, especially in the case of younger specimens.

A palm that gives character to the garden

The Chinese windmill palm is not just a plant. It creates an atmosphere. With a single well-placed specimen, you can make your garden more Mediterranean and special. And if you combine it with olive trees, citrus, yucca, or other Mediterranean plants, you can create a truly spectacular exotic garden.
