The Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is a classic, elegant perennial ornamental plant that captivates with its spicy-scented flowers and grey-green leaves. It loves the sun, prefers drier conditions, and makes an excellent cut flower.
Dianthus caryophyllus (Carnation) has been one of the most beloved perennial ornamental plants for centuries, growing 30–80 cm tall. Above its narrow, glaucous grey-green leaves, it produces elegant, single or double flowers that often emit a pleasant, spicy fragrance. It typically blooms from May to July, but by regularly deadheading spent flowers, many modern varieties will continue to bloom until early autumn. It is strictly a sun-lover (requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) and produces the most abundant flowers in full sun. It thrives best in loose, well-draining, slightly alkaline soil. Its water needs are moderate; it prefers slightly drier conditions and reacts very poorly to overwatering and waterlogging (especially in winter). It is perfectly frost-hardy and survives winters without extra protection, though winter drainage is crucial. Please note that the plant is mildly toxic to pets (dogs and cats) and can cause mild gastrointestinal upset.
Requires loose, well-draining soil. Water moderately and avoid waterlogging (especially in winter). Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Frost-hardy, but requires good winter drainage.
