The Moss Rose (Portulaca grandiflora 'Carneval') is a low-growing, fleshy-leaved, colorful annual flower. A true sun-lover, it thrives in the hottest spots with its incredible drought tolerance and continuous summer blooming.
Portulaca grandiflora 'Carneval' (Moss Rose) is a succulent, fleshy-leaved and stemmed annual ground cover plant growing only 10–20 cm tall. This 'Carneval' mix is a true riot of colors, producing yellow, orange, pink, red, white, and bicolored flowers from June until the first frosts. A unique feature is that its flowers only open fully in sunny weather, remaining closed on cloudy days. It is strictly a full sun-loving plant that thrives best in loose, sandy, well-draining (even nutrient-poor) soil. It is highly drought-tolerant and requires very infrequent watering; overwatering and waterlogging must be avoided as they can cause root rot. It is completely frost-sensitive and dies in autumn, but can easily be grown from seed in early spring. It is the perfect choice for rockeries, dry slopes, window boxes, and planters where it can bask in the heat. Please note that the plant is toxic to dogs and cats (contains calcium oxalates) and can cause irritation if ingested.
Requires loose, sandy, well-draining soil. Highly drought-tolerant; water only very infrequently. Strictly avoid overwatering and waterlogging. Requires no special feeding or pruning.
