The Cordyline is a palm-like ornamental shrub with sword-shaped leaves that exudes a tropical vibe. With its colorful foliage, it is a stunning focal point for patios and Mediterranean gardens, though it requires overwintering in colder climates.
Cordyline is a slow to medium-growing ornamental shrub that captivates with its exotic, tropical appearance. Although it develops a palm-like trunk and a rosette of leaves, it is not a true palm. Its long, sword-shaped leaves can boast green, burgundy, bronze, or variegated colors; the more sunlight it receives, the more intense the foliage color becomes. It requires loose, well-draining (sandy or gravelly) soil and moderate watering, tolerating waterlogging very poorly. It has moderate frost tolerance: older plants can briefly withstand -5 to -10 °C, but in colder climates like Hungary, it is safest to grow it in a pot and overwinter it indoors in a bright, cool (5–10 °C) location. Older specimens may also produce fragrant white flower clusters in the summer. The plant is toxic to dogs and cats (contains saponins), and ingestion can cause gastrointestinal issues.
Requires loose, well-draining soil. Water moderately and strictly avoid waterlogging. Frost-sensitive in colder climates; requires overwintering in a bright, cool (5–10 °C) place. Hardly requires any pruning.
