The 'Katsura' Japanese maple is a magical, slow-growing ornamental tree that becomes a radiant jewel of gardens and patios with its orange-salmon spring and bright yellow-orange autumn foliage.
Acer palmatum 'Katsura' is an elegant, slow-growing small ornamental tree or shrub reaching 2–4 meters in height (not to be confused with the Katsura tree). It has a natural, rounded or umbrella-like habit. Its specialty is the stunning color change: its finely lobed leaves "glow" in shades of orange, salmon, and yellow-green in spring, turn greener in summer, and dress in blazing yellow and orange colors again in autumn. It thrives best in a wind-sheltered, partially shaded location (morning sun and afternoon shade are most favorable), as the scorching midday sun can burn its foliage. It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-draining but consistently moist soil; alkaline soil can cause yellowing (chlorosis). It needs regular, even watering and tolerates complete drying out and waterlogging very poorly. It is fully winter-hardy, but young plants should be protected from spring frosts. It hardly requires any pruning; allow it to develop naturally. It is non-toxic to dogs and cats.
