The Zonal Geranium (Pelargonium zonale) is a classic, rewarding plant for balconies and gardens. It is a sun-lover, tolerates heat well, and adorns with spherical, colorful flower heads from spring to autumn.
Pelargonium zonale (upright or zonal geranium) is the most well-known and reliable geranium species, growing 30–60 cm tall with strong, fleshy stems. It gets its name from the dark, ring-like pattern (zone) often visible on its rounded leaves. From May until the first autumn frosts, it produces stunning, spherical flower clusters in a wide variety of colors. It is a true sun-lover, requiring 6–8 hours of daily sunlight and regular feeding for abundant blooming. It tolerates summer heat excellently. It requires moderate, even watering but is highly sensitive to overwatering and waterlogging; the top layer of soil should dry out slightly between waterings. Removing spent flowers encourages continuous blooming. It is not frost-hardy, so it must be moved to a bright, cool (5–10 °C) location before the first frosts. Pelargonium species can be toxic to cats and dogs.
Requires loose, well-draining soil. Water regularly but moderately, avoiding waterlogging. Feed weekly. Deadhead spent flowers. Sensitive to frost; overwinter in a cool, bright place.
