'Orido Nishiki' is a unique, variegated Japanese maple whose green, white, and pink speckled leaves lend a painting-like, distinctive look to partially shaded gardens.
Acer palmatum 'Orido Nishiki' is a true collector's rarity. This small ornamental tree or shrub, growing 2–4 meters tall with a loose crown, commands attention with its stunning variegated foliage. Every leaf features a unique pattern: cream-white and pink spots alternating on a green background. The pink hues are most intense in spring, while white and green dominate in summer. Because the variegated parts are more sensitive, it strictly requires a wind-sheltered, partially shaded location (morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal); the scorching midday sun can burn the white areas and fade the pink colors. It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-draining but consistently moist soil, and tolerates alkaline media poorly (which can cause chlorosis). It demands regular and even watering, avoiding both drying out and waterlogging. It is generally winter-hardy, but young specimens should be protected from spring frosts. It hardly requires any pruning. It is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats.
