'Pixie' is an extremely slow-growing, dwarf Japanese maple with a rounded shape and bright red-burgundy foliage, perfect for small gardens and patios.
Acer palmatum 'Pixie' is a small, slow-growing dwarf Japanese maple variety that only reaches 1–2 meters in height. It is a shrub with a rounded or slightly bushy, dense habit. Its finely lobed leaves are bright red in spring, burgundy-green in summer, and turn blazing bright red again in autumn. It thrives best in a wind-sheltered, partially shaded location (morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal), as the scorching midday sun can burn its leaves. It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-draining but evenly moist soil; alkaline soil can cause chlorosis. It needs regular, moderate watering and must be protected from both complete drying out and waterlogging. Due to its naturally compact shape, it hardly requires any pruning. It is generally winter-hardy, but young specimens should be protected from spring frosts. Due to its small size, it is excellent for container growing, rockeries, and Japanese-style gardens. It is non-toxic to dogs and cats.
