'Skeeter's Broom' is a columnar, compact dwarf Japanese maple. With its ever-changing foliage color and small space requirement, it is a perfect ornament for smaller gardens and patios.
Acer palmatum 'Skeeter's Broom' is a unique, dwarf-growing Japanese maple with a narrow, columnar habit, making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens or as a potted plant on patios. It slowly reaches a height of 1.5–3 meters. Its finely lobed leaves offer a true kaleidoscope of colors: bright red in spring, burgundy-green in summer, and blazing bright red again in autumn. It thrives best in a wind-sheltered, partially shaded location (morning sun and afternoon shade are most favorable), as the scorching midday sun can burn its foliage. It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-draining yet consistently moist soil; alkaline media can cause yellowing (chlorosis). It requires regular, even watering and tolerates both complete drying out and waterlogging very poorly. It is generally winter-hardy, but young shoots must be protected from late spring frosts. It is non-toxic to dogs and cats, so it can be safely planted in pet-friendly gardens.
