The Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is an easy-to-grow, highly frost-tolerant deciduous shrub. Its large, cone-shaped flower clusters bloom from mid-summer to autumn, starting white and later turning stunning shades of pink and burgundy.
Select SizeHydrangea paniculata is one of the most popular and easiest to grow hydrangea species. It is significantly more cold-hardy than traditional mophead hydrangeas (surviving down to -25 °C), blooms more reliably, and does not strictly require acidic soil. As a deciduous shrub, it grows 1.5–3 meters tall and produces massive, cone-shaped panicles from mid-summer to early autumn. The flowers open white or greenish-white and gradually change to shades of pink, cream, or burgundy. It thrives best in partial shade but can tolerate sunnier spots with regular and abundant watering (though it should be protected from harsh afternoon summer sun). A major advantage is that it blooms on new wood, so it can be easily and safely pruned in late winter or early spring, which encourages even larger and more abundant flowers. It looks spectacular whether planted in the garden or kept in a large pot on the patio.
Requires humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and regular watering; it does not tolerate drying out. Best pruned in late winter or early spring.
