The California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) is a fast-growing, thick-trunked, highly resilient palm. Its large, grayish-green fan leaves are adorned with characteristic white thread-like filaments, boasting excellent cold tolerance among ornamental palms.
Select SizeWashingtonia filifera is one of the most popular palm species that can be grown in temperate gardens, reaching up to 20–25 meters in its natural habitat. It develops a thick, robust trunk and large, grayish-green fan-shaped leaves with distinct white threads along the margins (hence the name "thread-bearing"). Its primary advantage is excellent cold hardiness: it can withstand brief drops to -8°C to -10°C without damage, and if kept dry, even survive minimums down to -12°C. Compared to the often confused Washingtonia robusta, it has a much thicker trunk, grayer-green foliage, more white threads, and is significantly more frost-tolerant. It thrives in full sun and grows rapidly during warm summers. While highly drought-tolerant once mature, young plants require regular watering. In colder climates, it is best kept in large pots or planted in sheltered locations with careful winter protection against wet and freezing conditions.
Requires well-draining soil; waterlogging can cause root rot. Water regularly when young; becomes drought-tolerant as it matures. Protect from prolonged wet and freezing conditions in winter.
