'Garnet' is a low-growing, cascading Japanese maple whose finely dissected, garnet-red leaves lend stunning elegance to gardens and patios.
Acer palmatum 'Garnet' is a highly spectacular, low-growing (1–2 meters tall, but wider) ornamental shrub with a spreading and slightly weeping (cascading) habit. It gets its name from its finely lace-like dissected leaves that boast a deep, garnet-red color from spring to autumn (darkening slightly in summer). It thrives best in a wind-sheltered, partially shaded location (morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal), as the scorching sun can easily burn its foliage. It requires slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-draining but consistently moist soil; alkaline soil can cause yellowing (chlorosis). It needs even, regular watering and tolerates both drying out and waterlogging very poorly. It is generally winter-hardy, but young specimens should be protected from spring frosts. Due to its natural, cascading form, it hardly requires any pruning. It is a perfect choice for rock gardens, water edges, Japanese gardens, and large containers. It is non-toxic to dogs and cats.
