The European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) is the only palm species native to Europe. Thanks to its multi-trunked, bushy growth, it has a compact and elegant appearance, rarely growing taller than 1-3 meters. It is a slow-growing but extremely long-lived plant, offering a stunning sight with its fan-shaped, blue-green or dark green leaves. Compared to the windmill palm, it handles drought and wind much better. Although it can tolerate short-term frosts between -8 and -12 °C, it is best kept as a potted plant in colder climates, or protected with winter covering if planted outdoors in a sheltered spot to avoid prolonged, wet cold.

Requires well-draining soil. Drought-tolerant, but overwatering must be avoided. Winter frost protection or indoor overwintering is recommended in colder climates.
