The green grape (Vitis vinifera) is a classic, sun-loving climbing vine that, when trained on a pergola, rewards gardeners with sweet, crisp clusters in late summer. Toxic to dogs and cats!
Vitis vinifera (common grape vine) is one of the oldest and most popular fruit-bearing climbing plants. It requires a support system (pergola, trellis, or wire) to climb using its tendrils. Green (white) grape varieties produce their refreshingly sweet, crisp, and juicy clusters in late summer and autumn. It is strictly a warmth and sun-loving plant, ripening its fruit properly only in full sunlight. It requires deep, well-draining soil. While established vines are drought-tolerant, they appreciate regular, deep watering during fruit set and ripening. The most critical aspects of its care are proper early spring pruning, which is essential for a rich harvest, and protection against fungal diseases. It is fully winter hardy. Important warning: Grapes (and raisins) are highly toxic to dogs and cats, causing severe acute kidney failure even in small amounts!
Requires deep, well-draining soil and full sunlight. A support system (trellis/pergola) is necessary. Requires proper pruning in early spring for abundant fruit.
