Select SizeThe Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is one of the most popular and cold-hardy palm species, native to central and eastern China. In its natural habitat, it can reach 10–15 meters in height, featuring a trunk covered in dense, brown, hemp-like fibers topped with massive green fan leaves. Its biggest appeal is its outstanding cold tolerance: it can briefly withstand frosts down to -15 to -18 °C. While older specimens in sheltered spots handle winter well, in colder climates like Hungary, it requires careful winter protection against persistent freezing and winter wetness (mulching the root zone, tying the leaves, and using a breathable horticultural fleece). It requires loose, well-draining soil and regular watering in summer, but tolerates waterlogging very poorly. It is a dioecious plant; female specimens produce dark blue-black berries after pollination. It is completely safe and non-toxic for dogs and cats.
