The Dahlia is a tuberous ornamental plant that blooms from summer to the first autumn frosts, offering an amazing variety of colors and shapes. It loves the sun, makes an excellent cut flower, and creates a stunning focal point in any garden.
The Dahlia is a highly spectacular tuberous perennial native to Central America. Depending on the variety, it can grow anywhere from 30 cm to 2 meters tall, producing flowers that range from tiny to the size of a dinner plate in almost every color imaginable except true blue. It blooms continuously from July until the first autumn frosts, especially if spent flowers are regularly deadheaded. A true sun-lover, it requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and nutrient-rich, well-draining soil for abundant blooming. It appreciates consistent watering but must be protected from waterlogging, which can cause the tubers to rot. Taller varieties may require staking in windy locations. Because its tubers are not frost-hardy, they should be planted outside after the danger of frost has passed in spring, and dug up after the first frost in autumn to be overwintered in a cool, frost-free place. Please note that dahlias are mildly toxic to pets (dogs and cats).
