The Dalmatian Bellflower (Campanula portenschlagiana) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial ground cover. It blooms abundantly with violet-blue bell-shaped flowers from early to late summer, is highly resilient, pet-friendly, and attracts pollinators.
Campanula portenschlagiana, commonly known as the Dalmatian Bellflower, is a low-growing evergreen perennial native to the rocky slopes of the Dalmatian Mountains. It forms a dense, rapidly spreading cushion of heart-shaped, bright green leaves, which transforms into a stunning carpet of violet-blue or lavender bell-shaped flowers from early to late summer. It thrives in both sunny and partially shaded locations, preferring well-draining, moderately moist soil. It dislikes waterlogging but boasts excellent frost tolerance (hardy down to -20°C). It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, at the base of stone walls, as a border plant, or in pots. After blooming, it should be cut back to maintain a compact shape and encourage further blooming. It is a highly rewarding, low-maintenance plant that is completely non-toxic, making it safe around dogs and cats, while its rich nectar also attracts bees and other pollinating insects.
Requires well-draining, moderately moist soil. Avoid waterlogging. Cut back after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Fully winter hardy.
